This tape is a flexible cast film of an alumina-silicate-based glass powder homogeneously dispersed in an organic vinyl matrix. The material is designed to be processed at temperatures approaching 1000 ºC and then be placed into constant service at 800 ºC. Sealing glass tape is provided layered between silicone-coated polyester film to protect the tape from mechanical handling damage. The nature of the alumina-silicate glass system insures that adjacent layers are drawninto intimate contact and that a gas-tight seal is formed a after the tape is thermally processed. Ceramic additives can be incorporated into this tape to create a designed dielectric thickness insuring electrical insulation between adjacent layers.
PROCESSING: Parts are formed by blanking sheets of the green tape to required geometries. A burnout cycle is necessary to remove all organic binders from the tape. A typical cycle involves a thermal ramp of 5 ºC per minute to 550 ºC with a 3-hour hold at this peak temperature. After removal of organics, the glass seal material can be ramped to the melt temperature of about 1000 ºC. Ramp rates used depend on the ceramic and metal materials used in the composite assembly.
