Hydrogen Permeation Membranes
The core of our expertise, and where REB Research started out, was sandwich-type
hydrogen permeation membranes. Metallic membranes are 100% selective
to hydrogen and several metals are more permeable and lower cost than
palladium. We have several patents in membranes and modual designs and
we also recently got a grant in this area.
Hydrogen Purifiers
REB Research makes hydrogen purifiers and hydrogen purification modules
that operate at 100 to 500 C, and 0 to 200 psi. Our Mr. Hydrogen, hydrogen
purifier is a complete, easy to use unit that delivers ppb quality hydrogen
gas for use in gas chromatographs and electronic manufacture. In these
applications it saves approximately $400/cylinder compared to UHP-Zero
grade hydrogen. We also sell the purifier modules alone, for OEM and
specialized uses like isotope separations, and mobile hydrogen generation,
e.g. by methanol-water reforming. Our purifiers and membranes resist
fouling from water, methane, ethane, CO, CO2, and ppm levels of H2S.
Because our membranes can operate at lower temperatures than traditional
palladium-silver, they can pass fewer impurities: 1 to 40 ppb verses
about 1 ppm for palladium silver. Hydrogen output vs temperature and
pressure and for Flux vs time. For more about our membrane technology
Membrane Reactors
A significant focus of REB Research is membrane reactors, an exciting
new technology used to generate ultrapure hydrogen from methanol, hydrocarbons,
or ammonia. Such reactors are much more efficient and compact than any
alternative of sequential reactors and separators. Click here for an
essay on the advantages of membrane reactors for use with fuel cells.

Hydrogen Sorbers
As part of our sandwich membrane work, we started deveolping 2 types
of hydrogen sorbers. Sandwich metallic and organo metallic. The latter
involve fullerenes and work in air. We make the only line of non-flammable,
non-carcinogenic (as best we know) hydrogen sorbers. Our metallic sorbers
also have exceptional capabilities when used in metal hydride batteries.
Catalysts
We're not very expert at catalysts. Working with the Royal Military
College we tried a lot that was available and found nothing that worked
well at the temperatures and pressures of hydrogen reactors. Over the
years, we developed a few that worked better than any on the market
and continue to work with RMC to develop better stuff.
Hydrogen Transport Barriers
We have gained expertise coating gold and other low-permeation materials
on stainless steel to reduce the rate of hydrogen transport.
