Brunnthal/Munich, Germany — February 20, 2009 — SFC Smart Fuel Cell, leading supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications, today announces the commercial launch of the JENNY portable fuel cell system for defense applications. The JENNY fuel cell was developed in the framework of JDA projects with international defense customers and has been in serial operation in the field by several NATO defense organizations since the beginning of last year.

SFC’s JENNY portable fuel cell is a compact, autonomous, silent power supply worn on the body. It ensures that even in remote terrain far from the power grid or any other power source and even under rough environmental conditions soldiers will have a dependable electricity supply fosfc_jennyr their electrical devices —at any time, in any mission and in any weather.

The JENNY portable fuel cell is operated in combination with the SFC Power Manager, an intelligent power management device which assures that virtually any electronic device can be supplied with electricity by the fuel cell or other available power sources. The SFC Power Manager automatically adapts current and voltage to ensure that mission-critical systems will operate reliably and for much longer periods than batteries alone would allow. sfc_toughbook

SFC’s JENNY fuel cells and the SFC Power Manager have met rigorous military requirements in extensive field tests and in actual field use. The small size of the fuel cell and the high energy density of the fuel methanol, along with the SFC Power Manager, reduce a soldier’s weight load up to 80 percent compared to carrying conventional lithium-ion batteries. In operation the fuel cell produces close to zero emissions and is barely detectable due to its low surface temperature. It has been proven to operate reliably even in challenging environments such as extreme temperatures (-20 °C to +50 °C / -4 °F to 122 °F) and – without any performance loss - at altitudes exceeding 4,000 m. (13,000 ft) or fully submerged under water.

In 2008, the JENNY portable fuel cell won 3rd third prize in the U.S. Defense Department’s Wearable Power Competition, while SFC’s next generation prototype, the M-25 Portable Fuel Cell, won the USD 1 million first prize in that competition. These prestigious placements underscore the company’s design and engineering leadership that have helped generate sales of more than 12,000 fuel cell products.

“We are proud that with the JENNY portable fuel cell we can offer soldiers a 100 percent reliable off-grid power source that will ensure that they do not run out of power during their mission ever again”, said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell. “With these properties and the weight saving benefits, the JENNY portable fuel cell makes an important contribution to the operability, efficiency and the protection of soldiers in the field.”

SFC will demonstrate the JENNY portable fuel cell at SFC’s Booth A03 in Hall 10 on Feb. 24, during IDEX at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, Feb. 22-26.

The M-25 Portable Fuel Cell with DuPont Wins $1 million, the Jenny Portable Fuel Cell with Capitol Connections Wins $250,000

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. & BRUNNTHAL, Germany & MUNICH, Germany, Oct 06, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG with its U.S. partners DuPont and Capitol Connections LLC today announced that two of their portable fuel cell systems integrating different technologies won first and third prizes in the U.S. Defense Department's Wearable Power Competition.

In a team effort with DuPont, the new groundbreaking SFC electrical power system, the M-25 Portable Fuel Cell, won the $1 million first prize. The company's JENNY fuel cell, entered by SFC and its partner Capitol Connections LLC of Middleburg, Va., won $250,000 for third prize in the competition. In both systems, the hybrid battery was still fully charged, with substantial amounts of fuel left in the cartridge at the end of the demanding 96-hour test protocol.

The two SFC fuel cells competed with nearly 170 entries in the inaugural Wearable Power Competition. The Department of Defense Research and Engineering established the Wearable Power Competition in 2007 to encourage innovation in energy systems carried by personnel during field missions. Attached to a standard military vest, the systems were required to provide 20W of average electric power for 96 hours, meet brief peak-power demand of up to 200W and weigh no more than 4 kg (8.8 pounds), or less than half a battery-powered system.

The M-25, which combines DuPont's direct methanol technology with SFC's commercially proven fuel cell systems, products, and integration expertise, was deployed for limited use in the field for the U.S. Army earlier this year. SFC's JENNY systems are in operation or field tests at numerous NATO defense organizations. Both systems include a fuel cell, a fuel cartridge, a rechargeable Li-ion battery and a DC/DC converter.

They can power a wide range of equipment, such as GPS navigation devices, communications equipment, computers, sensors, C4ISR gear, robots and UAVs. Weighing up to 80 percent less than conventional power sources, they also offer unparalleled high-energy density, safe and easy handling and considerably reduced logistics costs compared to previous power-supply systems.

"We are extremely proud that our partnerships with DuPont and Capitol Connections have won two top prizes in this rigorous Department of Defense competition to encourage innovation in wearable power systems," said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell. "Fuel cells are the portable and off-grid power sources of the future, and SFC has established its leadership in providing systems that meet a wide range of defense, industrial and consumer applications."

SFC, the first and only provider of fully commercialized fuel cell products, has sold more than 10,000 fuel cells worldwide.

"DuPont, in collaboration with SFC, is thrilled to have won the competition, and work with the Department of Defense to address the need for lightweight, long endurance power system for soldiers," said Mark S. Baunchalk, DuPont Fluoroproducts -- Fuel Cells Business Leader. "We greatly appreciate the strong collaboration with SFC and it was an honor to compete with the other teams showcasing our fuel cell technology that represents a major breakthrough in portability, weight reduction and prolonged power output."

"Our partnership with Smart Fuel Cell has provided the U.S. Air Force with leading fuel cell technology in the SFC Power Manager," said James Stephens, President of Capitol Connections. "The success of the JENNY 600S in this competition underscores this technology's ability to meet a range defense needs, and we are very proud to contribute to the safety and effectiveness of the U.S. armed forces."

The winners were announced Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., where bench and field tests beginning Sept. 28 determined the best-performing systems from among 20 semi-finalists.

Brunnthal, September 22, 2008 – This year the agricultural exhibition area of the Munich Octoberfest will see a premiere: The German agricultural retail expert BayWa AG presents a hunting cabin with integrated EFOY fuel cell by SFC Smart Fuel Cell, leading supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications. Finally, there is an environmentally friendly, lightweight, and silent power solution for hunting cabins that ensures 24/7 power availability in the cabin in any season and weather.

The EFOY fuel cell is directly connected to the cabin battery, continuously monitoring the battery’s charge state. Once this drops under a predefined level due to power consumption of lights, fridge or radio, the EFOY will automatically start operation and recharge the battery. When the battery is full, the fuel cell will just as automatically return into stand-by. The cabin owner doesn’t have to do a thing and can still fully enjoy the comforts of the cabin without limitations. 230 V devices can be operated in the cabin by using an inverter.

The EFOY fuel cell produces power reliably without requiring maintenance or user intervention. Fuel is available at all BayWa AG retail stores in practical 5 and 10 l cartridges. An M10 cartridge with 10 l fuel contains 11.1 kilo watt hours of power. That is enough power to independently operate the cabin’s electrical consumers for up to 14 days. In form of these convenient cartridges cabin owners can store a lot of energy at very low weight at their cabin. The advantage: as long as there are full cartridges, the cabin is fully independent of any external power supply.

The EFOY fuel cell works extremely silently – a decisive advantage over generators which produce a lot of noise and exhausts and disturb the environment. The EFOY fuel cell will also operate in hybrid mode with a solar cell. In this combination it only switches on when the solar cell does not produce enough power. In fair weather the cabin owner thus uses solar power, in bad weather or in winter the EFOY fuel cell reliably ensures full batteries. By-products of power generation in the EFOY fuel cell are just water steam and carbon dioxide in amounts equivalent to the breath of a child.

“We are excited that we can now offer hunters and cabin owners a 100% reliable power solution for their cabin with the EFOY fuel cell”, says Siegfried Mayer, Head of the Technical Department of BayWa AG. “Up to now a solution like that was just not available – many cabins are situated deep inside forests or very close to mountain walls, places, where the use of solar cells just makes no sense. Generators are simply too loud and will scare away the deer. The EFOY does not generate smell or noise and it is always available. Just what hunters need.”
“We are very proud that BayWa AG, a leading retail group for agricultural supplies, has integrated our EFOY fuel cell into their product portfolio”, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. “Now owners of hunting, mountain and holiday cabins can enjoy the same full power convenience and comfort of the EFOY fuel cells as thousands of motor home owners all across Europe. We are thrilled that Bay Wa AG offers our EFOY fuel cells in their retail stores.“

The EFOY fuel cell is available in four different models: EFOY 600, EFOY 900, EFOY 1200, and EFOY 1600 – with a charging capacity of 600 to 1,600 watt hours each per day depending on the cabin’s individual power requirements. The EFOY fuel cells and EFOY cartridges are available at all BayWa retail stores.

On the agricultural exhibition area of the Munich Octoberfest visitors can experience a cabin with integrated EFOY fuel cell at BayWa stand M. BayWa offers a cabin pre-equipped with EFOY fuel cell as well as individual EFOY fuel cells for integration into existing cabins.

Brunnthal, Germany, September 8, 2008 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, market leader in fuel cell technology for mobile and off-grid power solutions, has again received a significant order from the German Bundeswehr amounting to approximately EUR 840,000. The order includes an agreement with the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement to expand the deployability of SFC’s successful fuel cell technology in defense applications.

This project involves demonstrating that SFC fuel cells can be deployed even in demanding conditions - at heights up to 4,000 m and at temperatures of up to 55°C / 131 °F - with pure undiluted fuel. And the deployability of fuel cells under extreme conditions and at high temperatures, such as in a desert climate, is precisely where SFC has recently reported significant progress (see Press Release of July 14, 2008). These exciting innovations will now prove their worth in military deployment as part of the German Bundeswehr’s new technology program. This demonstration includes using SFC’s entire fuel cell program in the area of defense, from the portable fuel cells carried by soldiers, to successful mobile products that can be integrated into a vehicle, and the new FC 250 fuel cell system.

The FC 250 fuel cell was designed for field deployment as an independent source of energy that is available at all times. As part of the Bundeswehr technology program, SFC will further enhance this 250 W system so that it can be even more flexibly integrated into various types of vehicles. The system will be divided into two easy-to-carry units: an energy production unit and a tank unit. The tank unit in particular will be made more flexible and more compact. The FC 250 fuel cell allows users to reload radio batteries, observation systems and numerous other mobile devices. Its key advantages over traditional power sources such as generators include its ability to generate power with little noise and thus without being detected, its maintenance-free operation and the fact that it is over 30 times lighter than lead batteries.

This repeat order confirms the outstanding significance of SFC fuel cells in solving one of the most urgent problems faced by modern military organizations: a sufficient power supply in the field. Unlike other available power sources, these fuel cells ensure reliable use of mobile and portable energy devices anywhere in the field, at any time. “We are very proud that our entire product portfolio will come into play in this new order from the Bundeswehr. Our defense customers are interested not only in portable fuel cells, but increasingly also in our EFOY fuel cells, which have proven themselves a thousand times over in consumer and industrial applications and which are available in special versions created specifically to meet military demands,” said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. “This clearly shows that our products will be the standard power sources of choice for an increasing number of industries,” said Podesser.

Brunnthal, April 24, 2008 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, a leading supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications, has been awarded the “Industriepreis 2008” prize of the German small and medium size business organization “Initiative Mittelstand” The EFOY fuel cell was selected as the most interesting and most innovative solution of 2008 in the category“ energy”. “Initiative Mittelstand“honors industry products and solutions that feature an especially high user benefit and very high functionality.

SFC convinced the jury with a mobile fuel cell solution used by the Munich North motorway maintenance agency. In this application the EFOY fuel cell reliably and continuously supplies traffic guidance systems on motorways with power. The use of the fuel cell enables major cost savings in the application of hazard warning trailers with temporary LED-traffic signs. On the trailers the fuel cells continuously re-charge the batteries. Before integration of fuel cells the maximum operating time per trailer was eight hours, now the trailers will run for up to ten days without interruption and without requiring user intervention. “We have now been using the EFOY fuel cells for more than one and a half years”, says Peter Scheidler, head of the technical department at the Munich North motorway maintenance agency. “Before, we had to pull the trailers into the depot for a battery recharge on the grid every day, including the weekends. Now they run continuously for many days, which for us results in an enormous reduction of time, effort, and costs. We really love the fuel cell solution! “

The annual industry award marks the third time that “Initiative Mittelstand“ 2008 has set this innovation competition, which focuses on industry applications. 600 companies competed in 21 categories for marketing and PR services prizes in a total value of more than 75,000 EUR.

Brunnthal and Munich, February 13, 2008 – Two manufacturers of electrically powered vehicles have opted simultaneously to integrate the EFOY fuel cell as serial equipment in their vehicles. With immediate effect, the Dutch bicycle expert van Raam and Veloform GmbH, the German manufacturer of the well-known CityCruiser Velotaxi, will start manufacturing particular product lines with the environmentally friendly EFOY power supply as standard equipment. In both cases the EFOY fuel cell offers decisive advantages: it recharges the batteries off-grid – i.e. away from any power point and even during vehicle operation. The driver does not have to park his vehicle for recharging anymore. Annoying and costly interruptions, in which the vehicle cannot be used, are thus completely eliminated.

After the huge success in caravanning applications the EFOY fuel cell is now entering another attractive market with this first serial integration in bicycles. The commercial importance of the electric vehicle market is expected to grow and expand over the next years as environmental protection campaigns discussions about respirable dust become more dominant. With an extremely low weight the EFOY fuel cells ensures almost unlimited mileage for these vehicles. With a single fuel cartridge a light electric vehicle can cover up to 1,000 km. Operation of the fuel cell is environmentally friendly – the only by-products are water and carbon dioxide in an amount equivalent to what is contained in the breath of a child. The fuel for the EFOY fuel cell is nowadays also generated also from renewable resources.

van Raam specializes in the production of bicycles and bicycle frames to customer specification. Alongside the wide range of standard styles the company also produces vehicles to meet individual requirements. The “Fun2Go“ tricycle developed by van Raam for inner city traffic, which will now be equipped ex works with an EFOY fuel cell, is an interesting alternative for biking in pairs, transporting loads and for users with physical handicaps. With two side-by-side seats it is attractive for shopping, commuting, for holiday parks and hotels, and for also for events.

The CityCruiser and DeliveryCruiser vehicles from Veloform GmbH, also know as velotaxis, are ultramodern, muscle powered transport vehicles with electric support motor. They are so-called pedelecs (pedal electric cycle), i.e. bicycles with support motor. The emission free vehicles are used as mobile platforms for passengers, goods, and advertisements which are placed on the cabin. Driver and passengers sit in a safe, comfortable cell, goods and advertising material can be stored and easily accessed in the storage compartment of the DeliveryCruiser. Use of the EFOY fuel cell now also enables actively cooling or heating of the storage space.

Tourism organizers, hotel and golf court operators, rehab centers and other service providers are very interested in electric vehicles with fuel cell. Visitors to CBR can experience the world’s first serially equipped with a fuel cell tricycle at the Dreirad-Zentrum Munich booth 524, hall 6.
