Brunnthal, April 24, 2008 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, a leading supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications, has been awarded the “Industriepreis 2008” prize of the German small and medium size business organization “Initiative Mittelstand” The EFOY fuel cell was selected as the most interesting and most innovative solution of 2008 in the category“ energy”. “Initiative Mittelstand“honors industry products and solutions that feature an especially high user benefit and very high functionality.

SFC convinced the jury with a mobile fuel cell solution used by the Munich North motorway maintenance agency. In this application the EFOY fuel cell reliably and continuously supplies traffic guidance systems on motorways with power. The use of the fuel cell enables major cost savings in the application of hazard warning trailers with temporary LED-traffic signs. On the trailers the fuel cells continuously re-charge the batteries. Before integration of fuel cells the maximum operating time per trailer was eight hours, now the trailers will run for up to ten days without interruption and without requiring user intervention. “We have now been using the EFOY fuel cells for more than one and a half years”, says Peter Scheidler, head of the technical department at the Munich North motorway maintenance agency. “Before, we had to pull the trailers into the depot for a battery recharge on the grid every day, including the weekends. Now they run continuously for many days, which for us results in an enormous reduction of time, effort, and costs. We really love the fuel cell solution! “

The annual industry award marks the third time that “Initiative Mittelstand“ 2008 has set this innovation competition, which focuses on industry applications. 600 companies competed in 21 categories for marketing and PR services prizes in a total value of more than 75,000 EUR.

Brunnthal and Munich, February 13, 2008 – Two manufacturers of electrically powered vehicles have opted simultaneously to integrate the EFOY fuel cell as serial equipment in their vehicles. With immediate effect, the Dutch bicycle expert van Raam and Veloform GmbH, the German manufacturer of the well-known CityCruiser Velotaxi, will start manufacturing particular product lines with the environmentally friendly EFOY power supply as standard equipment. In both cases the EFOY fuel cell offers decisive advantages: it recharges the batteries off-grid – i.e. away from any power point and even during vehicle operation. The driver does not have to park his vehicle for recharging anymore. Annoying and costly interruptions, in which the vehicle cannot be used, are thus completely eliminated.

After the huge success in caravanning applications the EFOY fuel cell is now entering another attractive market with this first serial integration in bicycles. The commercial importance of the electric vehicle market is expected to grow and expand over the next years as environmental protection campaigns discussions about respirable dust become more dominant. With an extremely low weight the EFOY fuel cells ensures almost unlimited mileage for these vehicles. With a single fuel cartridge a light electric vehicle can cover up to 1,000 km. Operation of the fuel cell is environmentally friendly – the only by-products are water and carbon dioxide in an amount equivalent to what is contained in the breath of a child. The fuel for the EFOY fuel cell is nowadays also generated also from renewable resources.

van Raam specializes in the production of bicycles and bicycle frames to customer specification. Alongside the wide range of standard styles the company also produces vehicles to meet individual requirements. The “Fun2Go“ tricycle developed by van Raam for inner city traffic, which will now be equipped ex works with an EFOY fuel cell, is an interesting alternative for biking in pairs, transporting loads and for users with physical handicaps. With two side-by-side seats it is attractive for shopping, commuting, for holiday parks and hotels, and for also for events.

The CityCruiser and DeliveryCruiser vehicles from Veloform GmbH, also know as velotaxis, are ultramodern, muscle powered transport vehicles with electric support motor. They are so-called pedelecs (pedal electric cycle), i.e. bicycles with support motor. The emission free vehicles are used as mobile platforms for passengers, goods, and advertisements which are placed on the cabin. Driver and passengers sit in a safe, comfortable cell, goods and advertising material can be stored and easily accessed in the storage compartment of the DeliveryCruiser. Use of the EFOY fuel cell now also enables actively cooling or heating of the storage space.

Tourism organizers, hotel and golf court operators, rehab centers and other service providers are very interested in electric vehicles with fuel cell. Visitors to CBR can experience the world’s first serially equipped with a fuel cell tricycle at the Dreirad-Zentrum Munich booth 524, hall 6. Additional information is also available at http://www.dreirad-zentrum.de/.

Brunnthal--SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, market leader in fuel cell technologies for mobile and off-grid power applications, has again been awarded a commercial order for its portable fuel cells in a defense application. The order amounts to 350,000 Euro. Ordering costumer is a Western European defense organization. The order builds on the successful use of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG products in international tests. The order comprises portable Jenny fuel cells and Power Manager Units both by SFC. These systems will be used in an international peace-keeping mission.

Portable fuel cells by SFC are a compact power source carried on the body. They provide reliable, autonomous power anytime and anywhere so that soldiers will always have enough power to run their devices even in difficult terrain and in challenging environmental and weather conditions. In these situations the fuel cell’s advantages are an important asset: they are lightweight, silent and emission-free. The SFC fuel cell system reduces the load carried by the soldier by more than 80 percent compared to conventional lithium batteries. As a consequence, soldiers can reliably power their devices in longer missions with less battery weight. This increases their mobility and flexibility during the mission.

With the help of the SFC Power Manager almost any device used during the mission can be supplied with electricity by the fuel cell or any other available power source. Current and voltage are automatically adapted, ensuring that vitally important devices like radio and communication systems can be operated reliably and longer than with batteries. Thanks to integrated automatic cable recognition the SFC Power Manager directly adapts to the individual voltage requirements of the respective devices.

With this major order, SFC fuel cells have again demonstrated their significance for the autonomous power supply of soldiers in the field – one of the big challenges of modern defense organizations. “This order once more proves our competitive edge and the technical maturity of our fuel cells and power management products. It also shows that our successful international field and product tests are now leading to first commercial orders“, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. „Thus, the extensive qualification programs our products undergo even in extreme conditions in the field continue to bear fruit“.

Brunnthal, November 27, 2007 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, market leader in fuel cell technologies for mobile and off-grid power applications, has been awarded a major follow-up contract by the German Bundeswehr. The order amounts to approx. 2.5 million Euro.

The follow-up order builds on the success of the existing cooperation between the German Bundeswehr and SFC Smart Fuel Cell. Its purpose is to establish the use of fuel cells as a compact portable power source for the soldier. In addition, further fields of application are to be addressed, e.g. the use in vehicles as a non-detectable on-board power source and the general use as a universal autonomous energy provider in replacement of conventional generators and batteries. In all these contexts fuel cells offer exceptional advantages as a silent, lightweight and emission-free power source. To add to this, the enormously high energy density of the SFC products provides significant cost and emission reductions in the logistics area.

An extensive SFC product qualification program is dedicated to ensuring reliable operation under defense conditions. In this context, the use in high altitudes and the operation in extreme climates are addressed.

With this follow-up order SFC fuel cells have again demonstrated their superior benefits for the solution of one of today’s most urgent problems of modern defense organizations: the availability of power in the field. The use of fuel cells allows immediate reductions of up to 80 percent of the weight of power supplies carried by the soldier. “This new Bundeswehr order is expression of our leadership in the development and production of portable power systems for a large number of defense organizations worldwide“, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG. „We are very proud of the confidence placed in us and are looking forward to a long term cooperation with the Bundeswehr as their reliable partner.“

A significant part of this order will contribute to this year’s turnover of SFC.

SFC wins US Army OTC order for development of a 250 W fuel cell

Brunnthal, Germany, Jan. 23, 2007 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, technology and market leader in fuel cell based energy solutions, has again been selected for providing an advanced power solution to an important military program. In the context of an US Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC) order, SFC is to develop a 250 W Alternate Power Source Fuel Cell (APSFC) for use of the Army’s Operational Test Command (OTC).

The Army OTC conducts objective testing of potential Army systems.  To achieve this task, the OTC provides test scenarios which must occur in a realistic environment over many days.  This creates a challenge for the test data acquisition and test command and control systems.  These systems must operate seamlessly and avoid being a source of bias.  Stopping the test play to replace the data acquisition system’s batteries is not an option.  SFC’s APSFC will be a robust, reliable, compact, and lightweight power source for these data acquisition systems, producing quality DC power with very low detection signature.  The APSFC will be adapted to a variety of vehicle platforms and will be able to operate over 80 test hours without test range personnel maintenance or access.

The 250 W APSFC is based on SFC’s fully commercialized EFOY technology. It is a highly ruggedized stand alone 250 W lightweight power supply made to perform even in hash Army Test environments.  The APSFC is designed to be easily carried by one person.  It will export sufficient power to operate the OTC data acquisition suite used to collect data during operational tests of advanced Army systems.

“We are excited to have been selected for this important development order by OTC against all competition.  We feel SFC will provide a product which meets the requirements and schedule of OTC and best value for the US Army. This clearly confirms our strong technology position in the defense market”, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC.  “This product will be an ideal extension of our successful EFOY fuel cell portfolio towards higher outputs.  And it will open up additional applications, for example field and emergency chargers, but also new reliable 24/7power solutions for industrial off-grid systems and devices.”
